Perfection is something I struggle with on many levels, and know so many that do as well. There are 2 sides to perfectionism; one good and another bad.
The good side of perfection is that you never half-ass anything. You give it your all, and the quality you put out is amazing. But the other side is that perfection actually hinders your ability to take action, to move forward.
Why? Because things are never quite “there” or good enough. You always want to take it to the next level.
It doesn’t help our perfection tendencies when we are surrounded by the social media highlight reel. As inspiring it can be to see beautiful images and what people are achieving, it can also make us feel like we aren’t doing enough; sharing enough content, not doing as well as others, feeling like we could have done more.
But when we let our perfection tendencies go to the extreme, it becomes our shadow and hinders many aspects of our lives.
So what can we do to let go a little bit more and take more action?
One approach is becoming aware and mindful of when we are in a perfectionist zone. When you realize it you are taking it to an extreme, act and do the exact opposite right away. For example, I have been working on a self-love guide for a month now, tweaking the wording over and over because it is not quite right yet. Inside I know it is ready. I acknowledge that I am being a perfectionist and make the decision to finalize it and send it out into the world.
Perfection will stop you from taking action, from moving forward in life and/or business. And I know this is the last thing you want to happen!
One thing Amanda mentions in our chat is how perfectionism and over-achievement go hand in hand. And boy is this true. I am always focused on the end result and trying to outdo what I have done in the past, taking it one step further.
So another approach to rising above this block is to focus and acknowledge your efforts rather than the result. She shares how we can do so by starting a “what are you proud of’ journal practice. This will help you focus on the effort you put in, how you showed up and the journey itself rather than the result.
We talk about so much more in this episode that will help you get back to healthy place of self-love. So grab yourself a cup of organic tea and get comfy! It’s a good one!
