Women tend to take on the world, am I right?! We multi-task or rather I should say juggle many balls, while wearing many hats – mom, partner, friend, entrepreneur to name a few. And we set unbelievable expectations on ourselves for what we should look like, what we should weigh, how much we should accomplish, what our body should be capable of handling, what our relationships should be, and the list goes on and on.
Why do we do this to ourselves?!
Erin Treloar Founder of Raw Beauty Co and the highly acclaimed podcast Raw Beauty Talks has experienced so much of this first hand but has not let her journey stop her from finding her true purpose in life. Instead she uses her journey and experience to help woman overcome their struggles. Everyone will experience challenges in life, because let’s be honest, life is not perfect. But having support from someone and a community of women that understand and have experienced similar challenges can provide such comfort in those dark times.
Growing up, Erin suffered from what a lot of us do, especially now in this social media crazed world – the comparison game. It led to her developing an eating disorder from which she was able to recover, with the proper support of course. She developed expectations of what she should look like compared to others. This was the beginning of her journey to discovering her purpose. But through a complete burnout in 2018, she found her way back to that innate truth within herself – to live from a place of self-love.
She had 2 young children to care for, a relationship, 2 jobs for which she was deeply passionate about. How does one manage all of these demands! Then started the anxiety and panic attacks. She had scary thoughts that she didn’t feel in control of; feeling like she had to leave her family, that her husband would leave her. Her panic attacks left her so exhausted she would struggle getting out of bed but she would push herself for 3 hours a day to spend time with her kids.
How can the negative self-talk not creep in during such a dark time? Not living up to her expectations, being disappointed with herself, feeling like a failure and that all she was teaching others didn’t actually work because she was a dark place herself! That inner mean girl, as Melissa Ambrosini would say, was thriving.
She went back to the drawing board and used all the tools to help herself come out from this place she was in. She listened to what her body was telling her because what you truly need following a burnout is rest. Erin compared a burnout to having a raging fever – and I cannot agree more. You need to rest and heal your body following a burnout. You need to show yourself grace and let go of all set expectations.
Honoring yourself wholeheartedly and applying self-love is critical because how you feel about and treat yourself has an impact every aspect of your life. Self-love is like a muscle, it needs to be worked out regularly – and it only comes from putting in the work.
Life is not perfect and you are not perfect, so you need to give yourself grace when you fall short or don’t meet your expectations. She encourages woman to follow her 3 C’s: Stay curious for what works for you and what you need at any given moment. Show yourself self-compassion by maintaining a voice of how you would speak to a friend who is going through a difficult time and speak to yourself kindly. And commitment to self, being committed to doing what you need to do to get back to a place of love.
And when you feel you need that extra help to keep you on the journey of healing, allow yourself to be open to options available to you. She had to let go of a mindset she had around prescription medication. But it was what she needed to help her continue to do the work to heal – but also to help her show up for her family daily.
She understands and can feel in her body what women feel like when they come to her because she was just there a year ago! She is on the journey with her clients – she is learning and also sharing all that she learns.
